Warning, this is a hot topic and will result in much debate. Tithes historically pertain to farmers and food. So do we give a tenth of all our increase to the church or do we keep it all for ourselves? Let's answer this question without being to religious. Religion has often lead people away from the God they believe in and into a system where people can place themselves over others in seats of power or manipulation. This ofcourse is why we don't trust tithes in the first place. Why then should we tithe? There is a biblical principle behind tithing.
Hebrews 7:1-28 ESV
For this Melchizedek, king of Salem, priest of the Most High God, met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him, and to him Abraham apportioned a tenth part of everything. He is first, by translation of his name, king of righteousness, and then he is also king of Salem, that is, king of peace. He is without father or mother or genealogy, having neither beginning of days nor end of life, but resembling the Son of God he continues a priest forever. See how great this man was to whom Abraham the patriarch gave a tenth of the spoils! And those descendants of Levi who receive the priestly office have a commandment in the law to take tithes from the people, that is, from their brothers, though these also are descended from Abraham. ...
Yes a tithe was called forth from the produce but Abraham gave a tenth of all that God had gave him. But God does not command us to give a tenth of all our income. Abraham was not commanded to give this tithe, he chose to. There is power in putting God first, giving a tenth of all that God gave to us is wisdom. But why are you giving the tenth? The motive of your heart is the power, not the tithe.
2 Corinthians 9:7 ESV
Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.
Are you giving out of ritual or religion? Or are you honoring God fully with your heart and gratefully giving out of love? There is an distinction between the two, and it's your motive. The principle in sowing and reaping works, the lie is in believing that sowing and reaping has anything to do with your salvation.
The power of belief is strong enough to change cellular structure and heal diseases. We call it placebo. Belief in what you are doing gives power to your efforts. There are biblical principles in effect for the just and the unjust. They are not influential to your salvation but directly influence your situation. Giving to God out of love is powerful, giving to buy your atonement or manipulation of tithing for personal gain may still produce a financial gain but at the cost of spiritual loss. We are called to put others first before ourselves and giving to God only to recieve is not the same as putting God first. So ask yourself if you should give or not and ask why you are giving, seek wisdom and He will be found. Give to God because He is who He says He is, Love
